270 riders in support of Sandy Bay Rd Cycle/Walk Way
February 6, 2011
270 Bicycle Riders gathered at Marieville Esplanade on Sunday the 6th for what would be the biggest bicycle demonstration in Tasmania. Folks of all ages formed a line kilometres long to Sandown Park, Lower Sandy Bay in support of the Sandy Bay Rd Cycle/Walk Way development and the consultation process around it. Prizes were awarded for the bike with the most baskets (Sam Keely), the most well dressed participants (Alison and Alice), the youngest child (2 yrs old) and the most interesting bicycle contraption (Dave Ross).

Nice photos Liam, good work.
Fantastic effort by the organisers, why did ABC Radio National this morning only say 100 hundred riders? Did they only do the count at 11am?

What an uplifting event. The highlight (for us) was the considerable numbers of younger cyclists (under 12) who were riding.
During the course of the winter months last year, when Pen and I rode into the city from Taroona on a daily basis, we rarely saw any young children cycling along this busy section of road.
We hope that the Council will vote in favour of the recommended cycleway so that not just the current cyclists can have safer facilities, but the vastly larger numbers of younger (and older) cyclists can feel empowered to ride their bikes also.
Would recommend those with time and motivation write a quick email to HCC Aldermen, to let them know your thoughts. We’ve done so this week and have had a positive response. More people making their elected officials aware of this, the higher chance they realise it is an important issue for the Hobart community.
