Electric bikes viable transport alternative -
even in Tasmania!
“Tasmanian’s now have a healthier, happier and lower impact transport choice thanks to the new generation of recently arrived electric bicycles” said Maurice Wells, engineer, leading electric bicycle expert and proprietor of Glow Worm Bicycles in Sydney. After many years of high sales in Europe, these electric bikes are now available for sale and rental in Hobart – including Eco-Bikes in the CBD.
Mr Wells, who is visiting Tasmania with his partner Dr Kaitlin Beare, added “practicing what we preach, we are road testing our electric bikes in the hilly and demanding Tasmanian countryside and cities.
“After a pleasant, sweat-free, ride up Mt Wellington, we’re about to set off to Launceston via the steep climbs and exposed roads of the Central Plateau.”
“This trip is not about cross-country adventures but to show that these bikes can be a serious and reliable replacement for most car trips.
“We’d like to see the Tasmanian Department of Sustainable Transport and the major City Councils lead the way by supporting and building serious bicycle infrastructure in and between cities.” concluded Mr Wells.
“Replacing the daily car commute is one of the easiest ways Tasmanians can reduce their personal carbon footprint — currently one of the highest in the world.” added Ahmet Bektas, owner of eco-Bikes.
Mr Wells and Dr Beare will be departing Hobart, Macquarie Wharf number 1, Hunter St at 8:30am Tuesday 1st of February. They plan to arrive in Launceston Thursday afternoon 3rd of February.
In Launceston, they will hold a public meeting on electric bikes at City Park bandstand area between 6 and 7pm or in case of rain at the Launceston Environment Centre, Tamar St at the same time.
