At last I got my ears on this little number: Cycling in the City with Critical Mass by Ben Ross 2009 You may recall being interviewed at a Critical Mass Ride in Hobart over the last couple of years… well here is the finished piece which was played on a couple of radio stations last year. The photos are some shots I found with the interviewing taking place. Thanks for Ben for his great work. Read the rest of this entry »

Hobart monthly style soaked bicycle pilgrimage rolled through town again on the 25th June despite a rather rainy and gloomy day. Around 30 bicycle users explored a (almost) secret alleyway between Macquarie and Collins Street to then head west up Collins Street crossing Molle and along the muddy South Hobart Rivulet Track. I found the route really enjoyable due to the rather sketchy conditions on the main roads and we were able to enjoy a great cruise all the way down Macquarie St from South Hobart to finish up. My apologies for a lack of card tables for the petitions as well as the promised beverages and chain cleaning gear. Some miss judged time commitments and a blowout on my bike semi trailer meant I could only scratch together my little bob trailer in time and so just a few tunes out of the speaker in the back as a consolation prize. So the CEO of Bicycle Victoria has been in Hobart and I’m pretty happy about it. http://www.bv.com.au/about-us/41602/ I caught up with him and Mary McParland from Cycling South on behalf of the DHHS Bicycle Users Group at the Royal Hobart Hospital and guided him around the hospitals real and potential bike parking opportunities. In short he was very excited about the possibilities at the RHH for provision of some first class bicycle parking. For information about Bicycle Victoria check out http://www.bv.com.au/ and Cycling South http://www.cyclingsouth.org/. Stay tuned for some good results following this visit. The most impressive bike cage without a doubt has just been constructed at the eastern end of Liverpool Street. Big congrats to the peoples responsible for this proactive planning initiative and immediate construction along with the other bike hanging systems at the centre. It has a roof, you can ride in, it has a security door and lots of nice bike hanging racks. And it is easy to access from the road and highly visible. I almost have tears in my eyes. If you thought that the Advocacy, Advice or Adventure was starting to dwindle from the hands of Bicycle Tasmania then get on board as they have been trying to do something about this. I attended the meeting for HTH, 4 hours late after a night shift but still caught the end of it and it sounded really promising. See below for what was planned:

Bicycle Tasmania Future Driection Workshop Sunday 20th from 11am to 2pm. Read the rest of this entry »

UNIQUE PUBLIC BIKE ART COMMISSION FOR SALAMANCA & THE CITY

(Excerpt from HCC Media Release)

The Hobart City Council has a long history of Climate Action and national recognition for a significant reduction in carbon emissions. With a commitment to reducing traffic in the city, the Council has now embraced a new concept involving public art. Read the rest of this entry »

I stumbled upon this article I wrote for the school newspaper when I was in year 12. I had absolutely no recollection of writing it and so it came as a big surprise that I’d been getting into some bicycle advocacy before I even really rode a bike from A to B. I rode the 35km to school a couple of times on a BMX and while I enjoyed it I had to leave a bit to early for my liking for the 1.5 -2hr epic. Theres been some crew who seem a bit stand offish about the current ride style as they prefer a more in your face style and respect to them for putting the ideas out there, we tried a couple of times and received some pretty heavy critic from riders who said they’d love to take part but couldn’t if laws were broken intentionally. So anyways, I have now got a bit of history on the promotion front going back to 2004. How about that!

Here is an article written by Nick Fitzgerald about the 2nd big Critical Mass Ride in Hobart in August 2008 after the February ride.

Brisbane has some great pedestrian safety initiatives such as pedestrian priority traffic lights

The Road Safety Task force has once again blamed pedestrians for vehicles seriously injuring them in recent weeks. http://www.themercury.com.au/article/2010/06/04/150195_tasmania-news.html

Mikael over at Copenhagenize has been very talkative on this issue of fear mongering recently.

Hobarts June bicycle and pedestrian movement count happened on Tuesday 1st and about 8 special people were scattered around the city. We have a new and improved system where everyone has their sheets delivered with pre paid envelopes so they can return them at their own convenience. The new count sheet is taken from the Bicycle Victoria Super Tuesday format which coveres all movements on one sheet unlike the multiple pages we used to use. We are now also accounting for gender differences as well as whether riders are commuters or recreational/training riders. I can’t speak for anyone else but my count in Lower Sandy Bay had approximately 50 riders come through between 7-9 and surprisingly the majority were commuters. Read the rest of this entry »

Attention to Detail

June 2, 2010

So I’ve reached my fourth week of bus catching and am feeling proud and privileged to have managed without any significant issues. While I have only gone back to work the service between Hobart Taroona and Newtown has been very easy to use and not really inconvenienced me in the slightest. While I miss the freedom and feeling that comes with riding a bike from A to B in Hobart I have really enjoyed being able to sit back and relax for my journey between home and the city.
