The snow has finally arrived in Tassie, briefly. And while I didn’t make the 200 odd journey by bike to catch a few turns in the white powdery (or slushy) stuff, I certainly managed to roll from Taroona to South Hobart with skiis on the bob trailer and return without a second thought. Attempted to catch some surf the other day, but failed. None the less. Myth busted with regards to carting 2 surfboards on a Bob Trailer. Good workout and nice little sail when the wind is behind you. Who really needs a car boot eh?

Nick McKim and Lars Gemzoe raise their hands with the crowd

A cold rainy afternoon provided a fine turnout of folk for August’s star studded Critical Mass Ride in Hobart. Sustainable Transport Minister Nick McKim and world renowned Danish Architect from Copenhagen Lars Gemzoe spoke to riders before a spin out along Sandy Bay Rd to Long Beach and back. Hobart City Council Deputy Mayor came along to the ride briefing to show her support.

So there is a couple of weeks to go in the second consultation round for the Sandy Bay Cycle/Walk way project and things are hotting up. Helpful local residents have joined our efforts to promote the consultation in a rather different way through the launch of ‘Citizens opposed to the Sandy Bay Cycle Way’ and setting up their poster boy Jim Wilkinson MLC to stand up against the plan. Fair enough I say, people who have a lot to loose have a valid right to democratically exercise some protest activities but I’d suggest that lies and deliberate misquoting might not be the most ethical or politically correct way to go about it. Its voting time again. This time for a a rep in Canberra. This role is sure to be a powerful one when it comes to mobilising funding for improving amenity in Denison for bicycle users. I have attended a candidate debate as well as reading through the policy statements and while there is not a huge amount of clarity as to what specifics each candidate offers the non competitive biking world it seems the Greens’ Geoff Couser and Independent Andrew Wilkie are the only genuine movers and shakers in the hot seat. Either way and I think we can look forward to some positive outcomes. Over all, the greens once again have come on top with regards to promises relating to developing bikeways and promoting cycling.

I’ve visited Launceston a coupe of times in the last week and had a look at the new bike lanes that are being rolled out in the city. Local Health Professionals and students are urging the Hobart community to recognize the health benefits of the proposed Walk/Cycle way between Marieville Esplanade and Cartwright Reserve through supporting the plans drawn up by the Hobart City Council. Went and checked this man talk at the UTAS Sandy Bay Campus and I’ll pop up a recording I made of it when time allows. Across the globe, cities and towns are seeking sustainable transport solutions to respond to a changing climate and increasing oil prices. But what is best practice in sustainable transport? And what pitfalls should we avoid? Dr Lee Schipper, Senior Research Engineer of Stanford University, will examine the good, the bad and the ugly from sustainable transport strategies trialled around the world.
